Art appreciation

Several karst peaks overlap across the composition. A darker near mountain on the left descends towards the centre; another enters from the right and intersects with paler summits behind it. A cream and light-green opening occupies the middle, suggesting water and the thickest valley mist. No figure or building arrests the eye. Depth develops through changes in scale, tonal softness, and the partial concealment of one ridge by another.

Near rock is built from short grey-green, brown-grey, and occasional blue strokes, preserving a sense of turning mass. Pigment becomes thinner and edges softer with distance. White overlaps pale violet, grey, and young green to give the mist colour and density. Marks remain shorter and firmer on the mountains and broaden through the central atmosphere. Hard limestone and moist air are distinguished through touch as well as tone.

Qin has concentrated on southern Chinese scenery and the karst geography of Guilin. His academic oil-painting training gives him control of volume and tonal structure, while mist and reflection temper rigid contours. Humidity is the principal agent of distance here: near mountains retain their geological weight and far peaks nearly merge with light. Mist softens the peak edges and separates successive distances, so Guilin is described through the combined action of landform, humidity and light.

Style and context

Guilin has a long place in Chinese landscape imagery, where layered peaks, river space, and mist organise a depth through which the eye can travel. Modern oil painters rework that inheritance through colour, aerial perspective, and changes in paint thickness. In Guilin Landscape, the central mist is made from coloured paint and actively separates the near and far terrain.

Qin graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, where drawing and tonal structure formed an important basis. In his southern landscapes, he adapts that foundation to humidity through softer edges and a low-intensity palette. Limestone supplies the framework, mist divides the planes, and restrained green joins water with vegetation. A northwestern academic training is thus translated into close attention to a southern climate.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Qin Yun, born in 1978, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. His academic training emphasised drawing, tonal structure and spatial construction, providing the basis for his work with Chinese landscape subjects.

Qin focuses on landscape, including the karst terrain of Guilin and other southern Chinese scenery. His earlier emphasis on clearly built mountain forms developed towards thinner layers of mist, reflection and light. This allows the limestone peaks to retain their structure while conveying the humid atmosphere around them.

He participated in the Youth Artists Experimental Program at Xi'an Art Museum in 2015, the Art for Me exhibition at OCAT Xi'an in 2016, and the Plain Painting, Sudden Understanding exhibition of eight Shaanxi contemporary young oil painters at Dahua Museum, Xi'an, also in 2016. These exhibitions document his progression from academy training to an individual landscape practice.
