Art appreciation

A standing woman at the left faces right in profile, her long clothing extending from shoulder to ground. Lower on the right, several seated figures form a compact group. A central body inclines towards the left, while dark head coverings and pale sleeves overlap nearby. The broad field of grey and muted yellow above them makes the diagonal from the standing figure to the seated group especially clear.

Broad areas of grey-green, deep purple and brown form the clothes. Smaller passages of red, white and bright green gather around the nearer bodies. Faces receive limited modelling, while shoulders, cuffs and hems state direction more strongly. Long marks across the ground meet the raised turns of fabric, allowing the figures to share the same pale setting while darker masses keep their bodies distinct.

The standing woman faces the seated group across a short interval. Their lowered heads, turned bodies and overlapping sleeves convey physical proximity, while the contrast between standing and seated postures gives the gathering a quiet social structure. Qian Tieshi made repeated study trips to Tibet and developed western Chinese figure subjects over several years. That experience helps explain his concentration on the weight of long clothing, inclined bodies and collective poses rather than elaborate facial description.

Qian Tieshi trained at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts and made repeated study trips to Tibet between 2002 and 2006. Western Chinese figure subjects became part of his practice. His exploration of imagistic oil painting preserves recognisable bodies while allowing colour masses and energetic handling to carry weight and movement.

Highland Woman organises its figures through the contrast of standing and sitting. Simplified faces leave shoulders, sleeves and overlaps as the principal clues to posture. Academic modelling meets an economical, expressive description of the body. The artist's sustained interest in western subjects offers a context for attending to these grouped positions as well as to the surface of the clothing.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Qian Tieshi was born in Kaiyuan, Liaoning Province, in 1964 and is now based in Shenzhen. He graduated in 1990 from the Department of Design and Modeling at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, then worked in art education and oil painting from 1990 to 2002. He is a member of the Guangdong Artists Association and serves as vice chairman of the Hong Kong International Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association.

His practice centers on what he describes as searching for oil painting between likeness and unlikeness. Qian developed an imagistic oil-painting language that combines Western impressionist color, the expressive spirit of Chinese freehand painting, and a broad, forceful treatment of form. From 2002 to 2006 he made repeated field trips to Tibet, creating western-region subjects while also studying Chen-style taiji and bringing its sense of movement and inner rhythm into his painting.

His works have been selected for national and provincial exhibitions, including New Artists and New Works, Guangdong Artists Association anniversary exhibitions, and Shenzhen’s Pengcheng Autumn Art Exhibition, where Tibetan Wind received an excellence award.
