Art appreciation

Dark branches of Huangshan's Huangshan Welcoming Pine enter from the upper left, bend, and extend towards the right. Clusters of needles leave irregular openings between them. A smaller pine stands lower on the right, its slender trunk set against pale rock. The contrast between the heavy near branch and the finer distant tree establishes depth and identifies the steep environment in which Huangshan pines grow.

Broad strokes of grey-white, pale green and cream build the rock faces. Slanting planes descend through the view and intersect the horizontal branches. Brown-purple and deep grey preserve the turn of the wood, while dry marks remain at the edges of the needles. The pale central layers do not close every rock contour; changes in direction and overlapping tones describe the mountain's broken surfaces.

Wen Zhenfei places the famous pine at the upper edge without isolating it as an emblem. Its branch anchors the foreground and directs attention towards the illuminated rock, while the smaller pine answers it through scale and position. The choice reflects both direct study at Huangshan and Wen's imagistic approach to oil painting: pine, stone and mist remain recognisable, but brush movement and layered colour determine the force of the scene.

Huangshan's Huangshan Welcoming Pine is a landmark associated with hospitality, its outstretched branches likened to a host's welcoming arms. That image connects the mountain with human arrival. Here the branch also defines our near position, directing attention beyond it towards the rock faces.

Wen Zhenfei's practice belongs to the context of Chinese imagistic oil painting, bringing attention to expressive brush movement into the construction of a view. Recognisable pines and rocks remain connected through slanting strokes, horizontal sweeps and layers of light and dark. The branch's reach becomes clear through the handling, while differences between near wood, smaller tree and pale stone establish the height of the landscape.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Wen Zhenfei was born in 1963 in Qinghai, China. He graduated from the Fine Arts program of Qinghai Normal University in 1987 and later completed a master’s degree in oil painting at the Russian State Pedagogical University in 2007. He is a National First-Class Artist, Art Director of the Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen, and Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen Artists Association.

Wen’s practice is often described as imagistic oil painting, a language in which image and inner resonance grow together. He works from remembered sensation rather than fixed preparatory drawing, allowing chance, texture, and changing emotion to shape the picture. His stated aim is to transform traditional Chinese aesthetics through oil painting, moving beyond imported realist formulas toward what he has called a Chinese way of painting in oil.

His exhibition record includes solo presentations at the China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair, Gu Yuan Art Museum, Guan Cheng Art Museum, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Xu Beihong Memorial Museum, Shaanxi Art Museum, Dafen Art Museum, and Shenzhen University Art Museum. His publications include Shi: Paintings by Wen Zhenfei and Wen Zhenfei Painting Collection, and his essays have appeared in Chinese Oil Painting, National Art, and Guangdong Art.
