Painting analysis

Hundred Flowers feels less like looking at a bouquet than stepping close to a wall of living colour. Purple and blue blossoms gather along the lower edge, while yellow, orange, and white flowers rise through the centre toward a deep green band of leaves. With almost no sky or empty ground, the whole canvas becomes a soft enclosure, the kind of garden surface that makes the eye slow down and wander.

Li Peizhong builds that feeling through short, loaded strokes rather than careful botanical description. Petals appear as quick pulses of colour, then dissolve into darker leaves and small shadowed gaps, so the painting keeps breathing instead of turning flat. The warm yellow and orange passages lift the middle of the field, while the cooler violet flowers below hold the composition steady, like a quiet counterweight under all that bloom.

The work sits naturally between floral still life and modern garden painting. It has something of Pierre Bonnard's belief that colour can make an interior feel alive, yet Li keeps the surface more direct and open, closer to the pleasure of standing in front of summer growth at close range. Artist introduction

Li Peizhong (b. 1957, Shenyang) is an oil painter based in northeast China and a member of both the Chinese Arts and Crafts Artists Association and the Liaoning Provincial Artists Association. He trained in Shenyang during a period when the city's art academies were strongly influenced by the Russian academic tradition, and that inheritance — its emphasis on tonal weight, plein-air practice, and atmospheric depth — remains visible in his work today.

His primary subject is the northern Chinese landscape: the farmlands, rivers, and seasonal shifts of Liaoning and its surrounding provinces. He paints these scenes in a style that combines the heavy, earthy tonalities of the Russian landscape school with the brighter chromatic handling and light sensitivity of European Impressionism. Still life — flowers, fruit, household arrangements — forms a secondary but consistent part of his output.

Professionally, he has served for decades as art editor-in-chief at a children's newspaper publishing house in Shenyang, a position that has given him a long-term, stable base for his painting practice. His work has been shown in regional and national exhibitions across northeastern China.
