Art appreciation

The skaters run from left to right, with the leader placed lower and the two following figures receding towards the right. Bent knees, folded arms and torsos held close to the ice create a sequence of forward diagonals. Low course markers divide the rink into shallow bands, while the intervals between bodies register who leads and who follows. The viewpoint seems to be just outside the track as the group passes.

Grey-violet and nearly black horizontal strokes fill the background. Dry dragging and scraping reduce barrier, lights and spectators to fleeting traces. Thicker yellow, red, blue and white pick out the athletes, yet short strokes break their edges. Reflections on the ice appear as interrupted bars rather than a smooth mirror and cross the direction of the blades. Clearly structured poses against a blurred setting make speed a property of the paint itself.

Peng’s figure painting is marked by rhythmic structure, controlled light and a strong sense of movement. His experience in live figure-painting competitions also depends on finding the main action quickly. Here he selects the low position that best reveals a skater’s force and omits facial and event detail. Each body retains equipment, weight and articulation, while the group becomes a colour rhythm moving to the right.

Style and context

Since the nineteenth century, sports painting has used sequential action, cropping and softened edges to convey speed. Impressionist studies of momentary light and photography’s ability to divide motion both changed the treatment of athletic bodies. Ice Skating keeps the order of three recognisable figures, then extends their movement through dragged horizontals and broken reflections.

Peng works in both oil and ink, media that demand close control of the beginning and end of a stroke. Long rink marks operate like quickly written background, while a few exact lines secure joints and blades. The economy matches the experience of watching speed skating: the overall posture passes first, with colours and reflections registering a moment later. This balance keeps anatomy and velocity equally legible.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Peng Yuzhong was born in 1969 in Ji'an, Jiangxi, and is based in Shenzhen's Dafen Oil Painting Village. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Jiangxi Normal University and later undertook advanced study at the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University. He is a member of the Guangdong Provincial Artists Association and the Shenzhen Artists Association.

Working across ink painting and oil painting, Peng builds his figure and landscape subjects with rhythmic structure, clear tonal control, and a strong sense of movement. His exhibition record includes the 2004 China Beijing Art Expo, the Guangzhou International Art Fair, the inaugural Shenzhen International Cultural Industry Fair, and the 2008 Dafen Painters Six-Person Exhibition at the Dafen Art Museum, where he also served as a curator.

In 2016, he held the solo ink exhibition Myriad Mountains and Valleys. He received First Prize in the Figure Category at both the 1st and 3rd China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industry Fair live oil-painting competitions.
