Painting analysis

The race seems to enter the canvas already in the turn. Four skaters cut across the ice on a hard diagonal, knees low and shoulders driven forward, each body trying to keep the curve without losing speed. The red figure leads by only a breath; behind that flash of colour, yellow, blue, and pale uniforms press close enough to make the pursuit feel audible.

Peng Yuzhong paints the ice as movement rather than empty ground. Long, swept strokes pull the surface sideways, while violet-blue reflections and broken white marks suggest blades carving through a cold, unstable field. Around helmets, shoulders, and bent legs, the edges break into shorter dry marks, so the bodies never quite settle; the paint itself seems to be balancing at speed.

What makes Ice Skating work is that the sport becomes a picture of timing under pressure. It is not just about winning the race, but about the split second when discipline, risk, and forward force have to remain perfectly aligned. The painting has a kinship with Umberto Boccioni's search for bodies in motion, though Peng keeps the figures readable and grounded in the drama of the track. Oil on canvas, 90 × 60 cm.

Internationally, the comparison with Edgar Degas is useful less for surface resemblance than for attitude: both artists understand sport and performance as disciplined bodies shaped by training, repetition, and timing. Peng's version is more direct and less theatrical, rooted in the material speed of oil paint and in a Chinese painter's hybrid experience of ink, figure study, and modern public life.

Artist introduction

Peng Yuzhong was born in 1969 in Ji'an, Jiangxi, and is based in Shenzhen's Dafen Oil Painting Village. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Jiangxi Normal University and later undertook advanced study at the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University. He is a member of the Guangdong Provincial Artists Association and the Shenzhen Artists Association.

Working across ink painting and oil painting, Peng builds his figure and landscape subjects with rhythmic structure, clear tonal control, and a strong sense of movement. His exhibition record includes the 2004 China Beijing Art Expo, the Guangzhou International Art Fair, the inaugural Shenzhen International Cultural Industry Fair, and the 2008 Dafen Painters Six-Person Exhibition at the Dafen Art Museum, where he also served as a curator. In 2016, he held the solo ink exhibition Myriad Mountains and Valleys. He received First Prize in the Figure Category at both the 1st and 3rd China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industry Fair live oil-painting competitions.
