Art appreciation

Most of the canvas is occupied by layered crowns of trees. A roof enters from the foreground, and a bright meadow opens beside the water below. The horse stands in profile at the lower right, head lowered and weight evenly held. Its calm posture interrupts the upward surge of the woods and directs attention back to the shaded bank.

Leaves gather through short strokes, dabs, and compact deposits of paint. Lemon yellow, acid green, rust, violet-grey, and flashes of blue articulate depth within the darker green mass. The water is compressed into a shadowed horizontal band, while the meadow is laid in more broadly. Grey-white and brown patches simplify the horse, allowing the body to remain solid against the restless foliage.

The title’s spring is suggested by the shaded waterside below the trees. The horse lowers its head beside that dark horizontal band, linking its pause to the cool, moist setting. Li often places figures or animals within landscapes shaped by light and weather. In this work he closes the space around the subject, using the horse as the quiet point from which the density and sound of the woodland can be felt.

Style and context

This is an expressive landscape that keeps its trees, meadow, water, shelter, and animal legible while reorganising them through colour. Since Post-Impressionism, landscape painters have used chromatic structure to establish rhythm and mood alongside observed light. Li's yellow-greens, rusts, and dark violets perform that role without losing the physical setting.

Li Tiexiang's academic training supports the horse's believable stance, while his broader practice shows a sustained interest in atmosphere and the place of living beings within open terrain. Here the animal is set at the edge of the composition rather than isolated as a portrait. Dense crowns keep the eye moving; the lowered head slows it. The title grows out of this precise exchange between body, bank, and woodland.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Tiexiang was born in 1954 to a Mongolian family, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 1984, and now lives in Shenzhen. He serves as chairman of the Shenzhen Dafen Artists Association and belongs to the China Artists Association, Liaoning Artists Association, and the Shenzhen Artists Association council. In 2014, he was named an Outstanding Expert of Longgang District, Shenzhen.

His academic training established a firm approach to drawing and spatial structure. He works across landscape and figurative subjects, using changes in colour, paint texture and light to describe northern terrain, people and animals. This recurring attention to open land and its inhabitants provides a documented link between his training and the subjects in these paintings.

Li held a solo oil-painting exhibition in China in 1997 and two solo exhibitions in Tokyo in 2001. Mother and Child received an Excellence Award in the Liaoning section of the 10th National Art Exhibition in 2004. Naqu Girl was selected for the 4th Beijing International Art Biennale in 2010, and The Call from Afar entered the 2nd National Young and Middle-Aged Oil Painting Exhibition in 2013. A further solo exhibition was held at the Guangzhou Museum of Art in 2014.
