Art appreciation

A white dog stands slightly left of centre where the woodland track divides. Its body faces into the picture and its head turns towards the person in the distance. The four planted legs and lifted neck show a pause rather than running or play. Farther back, the standing figure is small but legible, holding a green bundle or branch against the darker trees.

The forked path supplies the main depth structure. Pale earth begins beneath the dog and separates around a central strip of grass, leading towards the figure on the right and deeper trees on the left. Vertical trunks repeat across the background, while green foliage and warmer brown ground distinguish the two routes. The white coat forms the strongest light area, keeping the animal visually present against the broken greens.

Dog and person acknowledge one another through orientation and distance: the animal looks up the path, and the figure faces back into the clearing. Yao Gongshi’s training in realist oil painting explains the firm bodily structure and readable space; his grounding in Chinese painting also appears in the economical treatment of foliage and branches. He concentrates on a small exchange of attention rather than a dramatic episode, allowing companionship to emerge from observable posture and placement.

Animal subjects in realist painting depend on accurate stance, weight and direction of gaze. Narrative can then arise from the way a body occupies its setting rather than from an added literary story. In Loyal Companion, the dog’s still posture, the divided track and the distant person establish a clear relationship across the woods.

Yao Gongshi studied both Chinese painting and oil painting, including training connected with the Xu Beihong realist lineage. The work brings those strands together: the dog and path are clearly constructed, while trees and leaves are stated through abbreviated marks. The result is a contemporary figurative scene in which spatial design supports the interaction between animal and person.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yao Gongshi is a Shenzhen-based artist and National First-Class Artist. He serves as president of the Shenzhen Youyi Painting and Calligraphy Academy and secretary-general of the Shenzhen Original Art Association. His training spans Chinese painting and oil painting.

In Chinese painting, he studied with Zhu Yingren at the China Academy of Art. In oil painting, he trained within the realist tradition associated with Xu Beihong and received early guidance from Li Kuanming. This combined background led him to attend closely to proportion, movement and structure in figure and animal subjects while retaining an interest in the rhythm of the brush.

His subjects include figures, animals, rural scenery and urban life. Documented works include Universiade Poet, Rongrong's Dream, Homesickness, Early Spring, Mother River and No. 168 Happiness Road. He has also participated in charitable art activities in Shenzhen.
