Art appreciation

The sitter occupies the centre. Her headdress opens upwards, the curved neckpiece passes from her left shoulder across the chest, and hanging elements carry the weight towards the lower edge. The bowl appears at right, opposing the leftward turn of the face. Her open smile and bright eyes place the pose within an exchange. Background curves move around the head and body without covering the expression or the supporting hand.

Warm brown, pink-grey and restrained shifts of light model the face, preserving subtle turns at the nose, cheek and mouth. Cream, pale grey and touches of yellow describe the headdress and neck ornaments through short strokes, raised dots and narrow vertical marks. The grey-violet ground is thinner. Long curves cross it like drawing or incision. Realist flesh, relief-like silver-coloured elements and flat pattern therefore create three distinct surfaces.

Born in Guangxi, Tao has repeatedly painted minority communities and regional life. His academic training in drawing and oil painting supports the clear turn of the head, the smile and the hand beneath the bowl. Sustained attention to Guangxi’s visual culture also makes the clothing integral to the portrait. He selects the ornamental shapes that most effectively frame the face and leaves secondary components abbreviated, allowing cultural identity and an individual response to remain visible together.

Style and context

Portraits of China’s ethnic minority communities became an important field of twentieth-century oil painting. Some works prioritised costume and regional record; later painters increasingly centred a particular sitter’s expression, posture and relationship to the person looking. Miao Girl retains identifiable dress and silver-coloured ornaments while giving the woman an active outward gaze, so she does not become a display of clothing alone.

The work also draws on modern decorative painting. Enlarged curves and shapes do not need to correspond to one specific ornament; they establish rhythm and remove the sitter from a conventional interior. Tao worked in design before becoming a full-time painter and has maintained a long figure practice. The meeting of flat pattern and modelled face brings those two forms of visual experience into the same canvas.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Tao Xingke, born in 1968 in Guangxi, is a Chinese oil painter of Zhuang ethnicity. He entered the Oil Painting Department of Guangxi Arts Institute in 1988 and graduated in 1992. During his student years, his works including Dong Ethnic Man, Hometown, and Little River were published in Guangxi Daily. After graduation, he worked as a designer at Shenzhen Vanke Boutique Company from 1992 to 1994, then devoted himself fully to oil painting.

His practice has long centered on people, regional life, and the visual memory of Guangxi, with a realist language shaped by careful drawing, controlled colour, and attention to character. His representative works include Years Like Smoke, Young Woman, Companion, Devotion, and Brother Waiting for Sister to Sing. In 2012, Brother Waiting for Sister to Sing received the Excellence Award in the China selection of a Louvre exhibition project in France.

Tao's paintings move between ethnic minority portraiture, regional landscape, and quiet figure studies. The Guangxi countryside — its Miao and Dong communities, river valleys, and village architecture — provides his recurring subjects. His handling of silver ornament, dark fabric, and controlled light gives cultural specificity without reducing the sitter to costume.
