Art appreciation

The river opens from the lower right, broadens through the centre and curves away on the left. Irregular tongues of mud and stone break the reflections into connected pools. Trees form a long dark band across the opposite bank, with a low hill rising gently behind. Without buildings or figures, the river’s course, banks and changing light carry the entire composition.

Silver, blue-grey and pale green strokes stretch across the water; some thicker passages are scraped back to reveal darker layers. Browns, greys, black and ochre accumulate on the near bank, with small yellow-green notes marking lit grass. Shorter, denser touches build the trees, while hill and sky are thinner and quieter. Rough foreground, luminous water and softened distance convey both topography and morning moisture.

Xu Peng has long painted northern Chinese villages, mountain country, snow and sections of the Great Wall, combining realist structure with free brushwork. Stable banks and changing reflections work together: the river and shoreline must remain convincing, while reflections shift with each stroke. He reserves the highest value for the water and surrounds it with dark earth and trees, setting transient light against the weight of the land.

Style and context

Impressionism made changing light a central problem of landscape painting. Water offered an especially responsive surface on which sky, land and sunlight could alter local colour. That investigation did not eliminate spatial realism; it asked colour and separate brushmarks to describe a specific time of day.

Riverbank in Morning Light keeps river, mudbank, trees and distant hill in clear recession, then records illumination through divided strokes. The silver-white channel is the brightest route through the scene, the brown-grey foreground retains material weight, and the hill dissolves into pale atmosphere. Xu Peng joins the solid geography of northern landscape to the brief colour of morning.

About the artist

Xu Peng, born in October 1985 in Chengde, Hebei province, is a Chinese oil painter after undergraduate study and membership in a municipal artists association. He works full-time in easel oil painting, focusing on landscape subjects rooted in northern China’s villages, mountains, snow scenes, old sections of the Great Wall, and rural life. His painting combines a realist foundation with freer, expressive brushwork.

Xu is especially interested in the weight and texture of northern landforms and in the seasonal atmosphere of the countryside. Representative works include Homeland Snow, Snow Field, Rural Feeling, and Clear Snow. His work has appeared in provincial and international Chinese painting exhibitions.

Snow won a bronze award at the Hebei Youth Art Exhibition in 2008; Homeland was shown in Classic Charm — Young Oil Painters Invitational Exhibition in 2011; Snow Field was selected for the first Hong Kong International Chinese Sketching Exhibition in 2012; and Clear Snow No. 2 received an excellence award in 2014.
