Art appreciation

The bouquet occupies the centre, with several yellow flowers rising above darker leaves and stems. Two vessels of different heights are partly absorbed into the tabletop below. The most pronounced structural element is the pale rectangle behind them, resembling a sharply defined area of stage light. Walls and table corners beyond it fall quickly into brown-black, concentrating the room around the flowers.

Lit petals are pressed into place with substantial yellow, white, and orange pigment. The darker field includes thin runs, scraping, and broad overpainting, with several marks descending vertically. Vessel and table retain volume through a few reflections and tonal boundaries rather than detailed contours. Thick flower marks, thin shadows, and falling traces meet across the surface, making illumination feel active within the paint.

Shi studies natural light through sustained plein-air work and brings that sensitivity into still life. Here the concentrated light separates a few yellow and white blooms from the dark foliage, vessels and table. Flowers act as concentrated blocks of yellow above the darker vessels, while the rectangular light defines their field. The arrangement directs attention to the way a limited area of light selects the bouquet, fixes its upper edge and leaves much of the supporting still life only partly disclosed.

Style and context

Strong light against darkness has a long history in European still life, where it gives ordinary objects volume and concentrates the viewer’s attention. Modern painting expanded that language by admitting drips, scraping, and unresolved edges, so that light also reveals the making of the surface. Flowers Under the Spotlight retains the dramatic tonal structure and opens it through freer handling.

Shi’s practice is grounded in classical realism, while years of travel and outdoor painting have brightened his palette and made his brushwork more immediate. Here he selects a few illuminated blossoms and vessels, allowing most foliage to remain in shadow. The decision extends his habit of observing light directly and gives the still life the immediacy of a changing condition: a shift in illumination would reorganise the whole field of colour.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Shi Fei was born in 1967 in the Greater Khingan Range, Heilongjiang, and is now based in Shenzhen, where he serves on the council of the Shenzhen Artists Association. His practice is grounded in realist construction and ranges from plein-air landscape and wetlands to studio still life.

Growing up in northeast China acquainted him with pronounced seasonal change. Years of travelling and painting outdoors extended that observation across different terrain and weather. Spending substantial periods each year in the field gradually raised the key of his palette and moved his brushwork from complete modelling towards quicker blocks of colour and loaded strokes.

His subjects include the Baiyangdian wetlands in Hebei as well as flowers, fruit and everyday vessels. Whether working from a distant landscape or objects on a table, he first establishes volume and tonal order, then preserves the speed of direct observation so that academic realism and immediate handling remain visible together.
