A table sits in open air under a sky that cannot decide between blue and white, and on it the light has arranged a still life of its own making — masses of cadmium and Naples yellow flowers tumbling from a ceramic vessel, their petals catching the sun so they glow from within. Beside them, pale fruit the colour of ripening pears rests in a blue-glazed bowl that anchors the composition. The air in this painting has movement — the way light behaves differently outdoors than in a studio, less controlled, more alive, turning every surface into a receiver.

The paint is laid on with the directness of someone who set up an easel, looked, and went to work — no underdrawing, no careful planning, just the honest sequence of eye to hand to canvas. Each flower head is three or four brushstrokes, sometimes loaded with two colours at once so yellow turns to cream at the petal's edge. The background dissolves into broad vertical strokes of blue and white that suggest sky without spelling it out. The tablecloth catches light in loose, confident marks — the memory of fabric rather than its description.

The yellow against blue creates a vibration that the eye registers before the mind names the objects.
