Art appreciation

The boat spans the lower middle of the canvas, its bow lifting at left and stern extending towards the right edge. Two tarpaulins follow curved ribs over the cabin, lavender on the left and cold white on the right. Slanting poles cross the fabric and reveal the working structure beneath. Buildings press close to the bank behind, where doorways, walls and eaves overlap and leave only a narrow strip of reflected water.

Loaded pale strokes describe the tarpaulins, with grey-violet and green-grey turns indicating folds. Brown-black, grey-green and touches of ochre build the hull, while finer hard lines hold the edges and framework. Repeated wiping across the masonry allows pink-grey, pale green and earth colour to show through like weathering caused by damp air. Broad dark-green strokes compress reflections and give the boat a stable, substantial presence.

Bai has long observed the coastal and waterside communities of southern China, recording local life as it changes. His covered boat at rest makes maintenance, mooring and waiting the subject. Academic realism preserves the functional structure of the vessel, while lavender, grey-green and reflected water describe the moist atmosphere. Daily life remains legible through its objects even in the absence of people.

Boats, bridges, dwellings and water have long organised travel and habitation in Chinese waterside painting. Twentieth-century oil painters brought observed light and material texture to the subject, recording both local architecture and changing ways of life. Quiet Town Fishing Boat brings the vessel close enough for its coverings, framework and worn surroundings to show.

Bai graduated from Nanjing University of the Arts and later pursued advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. This training supports the exact relation between boat and bank, while sustained work in southern waterside towns accounts for his attention to the practical ways vessels are covered and secured. Pale tarpaulins admit light into a subdued setting, and the deep green water contains their reflection. The fitted coverings, exposed framework and slack mooring lines show a working boat secured at rest.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Bai Jiapu, also written as Bai Jiafu, is a Chinese oil painter who studied at the Nanjing University of the Arts and completed advanced training at the Central Academy of Fine Arts Oil Painting Workshop. He studied under Liu Haisu, a key figure in modern Chinese oil painting.

He is a member of the China Artists Association, Vice-Chairman of the Art Committee of the Hong Kong International Academy of Painting, and Director of the Ruoshui Painting Academy. His work focuses on southern Chinese coastal and waterside communities, using realist observation and impressionist light to record places and ways of life that are gradually disappearing.

Bai received the China Figure Painter Celebrity Award in 2002. In 2006 he donated the large-scale oil painting Salvation to the China Charity Federation for leukaemia relief, and multiple works have entered collections including the United Nations Population Fund and the World Health Organization.
