Painting analysis

Roses from a Friend shows a full bunch of roses set in a dark vase. The vase sits low in the square canvas, while the red and pink flowers spread upward and outward, filling most of the picture. A few petals are pale where the light catches them, and the darker folds of red make the bouquet feel fresh without looking too carefully arranged.

Yang Lixin paints the flowers with a relaxed hand. The petals are not outlined one by one; they are built from soft, visible strokes that move from pink to cream and then back into red. Green leaves and the brown-green background keep the colour from becoming too sweet. The painting feels close to daily life: a friend brings flowers, the flowers are placed in a vase, and the room becomes a little warmer.

The square format helps the bouquet feel simple and direct. Compared with Henri Fantin-Latour’s more formal flower paintings, Yang’s roses are looser and less staged, with more attention to the ordinary pleasure of keeping flowers nearby. Artist introduction

Yang Lixin was born in 1944 in Anshan, Liaoning, and graduated from the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 1966. She is recorded as a member of the Liaoning branch of the China Artists Association and a member of the Shenzhen Artists Association. Her career began with solid northern academic training and later developed within South China's active art market and exhibition environment.

Her work is associated with lyrical realism. Yang is known for landscapes, Jiangnan water-town scenes, lotus ponds, and natural subjects, often bringing Western Impressionist sensitivity to colour into dialogue with the quiet observation of Chinese ink painting. Her brushwork is delicate but alive, and her colour tends toward warmth, layered atmosphere, and a restrained sense of life.

Within the southern Chinese art market, Yang's paintings have received strong institutional recognition. Works such as her Water Town series show how she turns familiar regional and natural subjects into calm, emotionally sustained compositions, where light, colour, and restraint carry the image more than overt narrative.
