Painting analysis

The Songhua River is held in a long winter pause: a wide sheet of pale ice stretches across the painting, broken only by moored boats, low banks, and the faint line of the distant city. The sky is a soft grey touched with muted gold, and the frozen surface catches blue-white light in quiet patches. Nothing in the scene is dramatic, yet the stillness feels complete, as if the sound of water has been replaced by the weight of cold air.

Li Jiyong builds that stillness through restrained colour and measured brushwork. Thin grey-blue passages keep the ice luminous rather than heavy, while warmer touches near the boats and shoreline prevent the winter scene from becoming empty. The boats sit upright in their moorings, not as decorative details but as signs of daily life suspended for the season; their dark shapes give the broad ice field a human scale.

Painted in 2011, Silent Songhua River belongs to Li's long observation of northeastern China, where winter changes both landscape and pace of life. The work has a quiet affinity with the winter landscapes of Isaac Levitan: both painters let atmosphere carry feeling without forcing sentiment. In Silent Songhua River, that lineage is closer to atmospheric realism than to heroic landscape painting. A useful comparison is Isaac Levitan, whose Russian landscapes often allowed weather, distance, and tonal restraint to carry emotional force. Li's treatment is more specific to the Songhua River basin, yet it shares Levitan's belief that a quiet scene can hold great weight when light, season, and place are carefully observed.

Artist introduction

Li Jiyong (born 1941, Yingkou, Liaoning) is a Chinese oil painter and long-time art educator whose practice is rooted in northeastern China's winter landscapes, industrial cities, and frozen waterways. He graduated from Harbin Normal University in 1966, completed advanced oil painting study at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 1980, and later joined a national art-theory research program at the Chinese Art Research Institute in 1992.

His career has been closely connected to art education in Heilongjiang Province. Li served as Director of Stage Art at the Heilongjiang Provincial Art School and was a visiting professor at the Art College of Harbin Normal University. He also held professional roles including council member of the Heilongjiang Provincial Artists Association and Secretary-General of the Heilongjiang Watercolor Painting Society.

Li's painting is known for restrained colour, northern winter light, and a patient attention to the lived atmosphere of the Songhua River basin. Rather than treating ice and snow as decorative subjects, he records them as conditions that shape daily rhythm, memory, and regional identity in China's far northeast.
