Art appreciation

The two discs share a central vertical axis, the upper one larger and joined to the lower through white ornament. Concentric rings lead the eye towards a rotating centre, mirrored dragons flank it, and wings open towards the edges. The lower disc is darker and sends white organic lines into the surrounding field. Human silhouettes, wings and hearts connect the mechanical appearance of the rings with bodily and emotional signs.

The black ground is deep and comparatively even. White lines shift in width across solid wing shapes, fine scrolls and scratched marks. Flat grey enters the centres, and reversals of black and white give the concentric forms a sense of rotation. Red is used sparingly, gathering from splashes above into one vertical run that crosses the otherwise closed circles. Controlled white pattern and gravity-led red paint produce two distinct kinds of rhythm.

Liu’s practice ranges from landscape and urban subjects to abstract construction, often organising an image through line, symbol and tension. Sound 3 turns sound into visible repetition: concentric circles suggest vibration or speakers, bilateral symmetry establishes a pulse, and scrolls with wings distribute it outwards. No musical genre is named, and dragons, people and hearts are organised through repeated emblems and interruptions. Their visual echoes create several levels of force and pace.

Style and context

Liu moves between observed subjects and symbolic construction, and this work belongs to the latter. Black and white keep the dense line work legible, while the single red passage breaks the otherwise controlled scheme. Repeated circles and partial bilateral symmetry establish the principal beat; wings, scrolls and small silhouettes extend it around the two discs. The vertical run then cuts through both centres, introducing a visible interruption without assigning the symbols one fixed story.

The title Sound 3 can therefore be connected to specific formal events: repetition, pause, overlap and return. The upper and lower discs differ in scale, the surrounding emblems vary in density, and the red paint crosses rather than follows their outlines. Rhythm arises from those measured changes across the surface.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Xianglin is a professional painter based in Shenzhen’s Dafen Oil Painting Village, working in oil painting and watercolor-gouache. His practice covers rural landscape, urban human scenes, still life, thematic contemporary painting, and abstract or semi-abstract composition.

Across these subjects, he often works with rhythm, color, line, and pictorial tension, moving between observed life and symbolic structure. Liu’s exhibition record begins in Shenzhen in 2007, including group activities connected with the Shenzhen Contemporary Art Creation Base and Guanshan Yue Art Museum.

His oil painting Winter Hometown received first prize at the 2013 China Dream art exhibition, and later works were selected for exhibitions at Shenzhen Shiyan Exhibition Hall, Dafen Art Museum, the China International Cultural Industry Fair, and national watercolor-gouache shows. In 2025, his gouache Melody was published in Research and Creation in Watercolor and Gouache.
