Art appreciation

The child sits near the centre, facing us, while the standing barber occupies much of the right side with raised arms and a broad blue back. Seated and standing, frontal and turned away, their bodies form an immediate relationship. A bicycle leans diagonally against the wall on the left; another rear wheel appears at the right. The child's sidelong look briefly opens the working scene to an unexpected observer.

Long organises the painting through muted grey, brick red, faded pink, and work-coat blue. Wall, paving, and fabric all appear sun-worn and handled rather than newly clean. The blue coat becomes the clearest mass, and the pink cape gathers the smaller body of the child. Fine modelling appears in skin, shoes, and enamel vessels, while rubbed textures remain visible across brick and stone.

The sign is integral to the scene. Its hand-painted Chinese announces “haircuts for women and men,” “perms and hair colouring,” and “home visits,” placing a modest range of services beside equally modest equipment. Long repeatedly paints vernacular life and everyday rituals. The adult continues to work while the child looks directly beyond the picture. Childhood is carried by that clear glance, the oversized cape and the practical street setting rather than by a softened image of the past.

Contemporary Chinese realist painting has often turned to ordinary social settings, using precise observation and environmental detail to resist generalised narrative. Childhood Memory keeps its wall, sign, bicycles, tools, and paving. The child's direct glance remains part of the haircut, the working adult and the surrounding street rather than an isolated study of expression.

Long Yimin trained in oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and has repeatedly addressed Dong-community life, rural experience, and everyday ritual. He uses layered glazing to develop figures and space while allowing rougher textures to remain in walls, cloth, and ground. Here close modelling is reserved for the child's glance, and broader handling keeps the street around it active. The result preserves the specificity of an ordinary encounter without assigning the child a fixed state of mind.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Long Yimin was born in Sansui, Guizhou, in 1977 and is of Dong ethnicity. He studied in the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts from 1996 to 2000 and completed a master’s degree at the Chinese National Academy of Arts from 2003 to 2006. He is Associate Professor and Director of the Fine Arts Teaching and Research Office at Anshun University and a member of the China Artists Association.

His oil paintings draw mainly on Dong village life in mountainous Guizhou. Dark tonal structures, layered glazing and careful drawing describe figures, timber houses and everyday labour. His academic training provides the foundation for small distinctions of skin, clothing and interior light within predominantly low-key scenes.

Autumn Ritual was selected for the second Shenzhen Dafen International Oil Painting Biennale in 2020, and Busy Drying Cloth in Golden Autumn appeared in the Colorful Guizhou Art Competition. Across this work, he has brought academic realist construction into sustained observation of Dong community life, developing a practice centred on subdued colour and quiet narrative.
