Westward Journey unfolds in a wide, warm landscape where the road seems to continue beyond sight. A mounted rider follows two horses ahead, their bodies gathered in a loose rhythm across the ochre ground. Behind the forward horses, only the brim of a hat appears, a small sign that another companion may be hidden within the caravan. The image recalls the old memory of Tibetan trading routes, where horses, goods and people moved slowly across high, dry distances.

Qian Tieshi does not illustrate that history literally. He lets it enter through atmosphere: dust-colored paint, abbreviated figures, and the measured spacing between horse, rider and horizon. The darker strokes of animal, tack and body hold the caravan together, while the surrounding land opens into orange-brown earth, muted grey and pale sky. The forms remain partly unresolved, as if seen through movement and weather.

Painted in 2016, the work carries the mood of a journey already underway. Its emotion is restrained — companionship, fatigue, direction, and the unspoken knowledge of a long road. The reference to caravan life gives the scene depth, but the painting remains quiet: not a heroic tale, but a small procession crossing land and time. Oil on canvas, 90 × 60 cm.

The equestrian caravan has a long place in figurative painting because it carries narrative without requiring explicit drama. In Westward Journey, the horse is not a monument and the rider is not a conqueror; together with the other horses, they form a travelling unit moving through open land. The image depends on spacing, direction and atmosphere rather than anecdote.

Qian Tieshi’s handling belongs to an imagistic oil-painting language, where observed form is loosened by expressive color and brushwork. The western terrain, the caravan motif and the warm, abbreviated surface all point toward movement and passage. The painting is therefore less a literal illustration of travel than a compact image of endurance across distance.

Artist Profile

Artist introduction

Qian Tieshi was born in Kaiyuan, Liaoning Province, in 1964 and is now based in Shenzhen. He graduated in 1990 from the Department of Design and Modeling at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, then worked in art education and oil painting from 1990 to 2002. He is a member of the Guangdong Artists Association and serves as vice chairman of the Hong Kong International Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association.

His practice centers on what he describes as searching for oil painting between likeness and unlikeness. Qian developed an imagistic oil-painting language that combines Western impressionist color, the expressive spirit of Chinese freehand painting, and a broad, forceful treatment of form. From 2002 to 2006 he made repeated field trips to Tibet, creating western-region subjects while also studying Chen-style taiji and bringing its sense of movement and inner rhythm into his painting.

His works have been selected for national and provincial exhibitions, including New Artists and New Works, Guangdong Artists Association anniversary exhibitions, and Shenzhen’s Pengcheng Autumn Art Exhibition, where Tibetan Wind received an excellence award. Several works are held in institutional and private collections, including Shenzhen Party School and collectors in China and abroad.
