Art appreciation

The two highest groups stand to either side of the centre and nearly reach the upper edge, leaving a gap towards yellow ground beyond. Lower woodland continues off the left side and darker vegetation closes the right. Foreground growth is spread with open marks. Small white buildings remain partly concealed beneath the trees and in the distance. They do not take over the composition, yet connect the woodland with a settled rural area.

Ochre, gold, brown and small orange touches build the crowns in heavy strokes. Fine pale lines scratched through them expose trunks. Blue-black, deep green and violet darken the forest floor, while broad grey-green, pale blue and acid-yellow marks cover the foreground. Violet-red ridges form a transition into the blue-grey sky. Vertical trunks repeatedly cross horizontal bands of land and distance, establishing a strong rhythm.

Liu Ping bases his realist landscapes on sustained outdoor study and often organises Shandong terrain through substantial colour and visible marks. Trees provide the main structure here because their height records autumn colour and vertical growth, while gaps between them reveal fields and settlement. Scratched lines and blocks of paint preserve the pace of work instead of smoothing the grove into meticulous description.

Style and context

Chishang Town lies in the southern mountains of Boshan, near the source of the Zi River and the Lushan landscape. The painting treats this upland setting through autumn woodland, layered ridges and a small cluster of buildings. Rather than isolating a landmark, it shows settlement embedded within the changing colour and relief of the hills.

Realist landscape organises changing trees into volume, interval and depth, while modern painting allows blocks of colour and exposed brushwork to carry that structure. Chishang Town, Zibo interrupts a wide view with vertical groves, then reopens it through horizontal bands of foreground, yellow land, violet distance and sky. Warm crowns move forward and cooler gaps lead back, joining observation and material rhythm within one composition.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
