Art appreciation

Pink and orange-red peaches gather inside and around a shallow, pale circular container. Several fruits spread across the table in front; the rim partly conceals those further back. One leaf crosses the left side of the rim, and separate peaches extend the arrangement toward both edges. Their dark reflections settle into the reddish-brown tabletop, while a patterned cloth rises behind the group.

Light falls most clearly on the upper-left side of the fruit. Pale pink turns through orange into deeper red-brown near the base, and the groove of each peach faces a slightly different direction. Those changes keep the rounded forms distinct despite their similar size and colour. The container provides another surface: its rim catches a narrow, concentrated highlight, whereas reflections beneath the fruit spread into broader vertical strokes.

The low arrangement is held together by contact and overlap. The front peaches hide part of the container, the leaf bridges fruit and rim, and the fruit at the far left sits apart within the darker cloth. Li Peizhong's tonal training is visible in the restrained range of browns, pinks and greys. Rather than heightening the fruit with sharp colour contrasts, he lets small differences of light, shadow and reflected colour establish ripeness, weight and material.

Li Peizhong trained in Shenyang, and his painting is associated with the Russian academic tradition within northeastern Chinese oil painting, particularly its attention to tonal weight and volume. Alongside northern landscapes, his continuing still-life practice concentrates those concerns on the illumination and contact of a few household objects.

In Fresh Peaches, the darker table and backdrop support the pink-orange fruit. Light changes with each peach's orientation; shaded undersides and cast shadows give them weight. Soft transitions keep the skins rounded, while the bright rim distinguishes another material. Tonal relationships used to separate masses in landscape become a way of describing depth between neighbouring fruits.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Peizhong (b. 1957, Shenyang) is an oil painter based in northeast China and a member of both the Chinese Arts and Crafts Artists Association and the Liaoning Provincial Artists Association. He trained in Shenyang during a period when the city's art academies were strongly influenced by the Russian academic tradition, and that inheritance — its emphasis on tonal weight, plein-air practice, and atmospheric depth — remains visible in his work today.

His primary subject is the northern Chinese landscape: the farmlands, rivers, and seasonal shifts of Liaoning and its surrounding provinces. He paints these scenes in a style that combines the heavy, earthy tonalities of the Russian landscape school with the brighter chromatic handling and light sensitivity of European Impressionism. Still life — flowers, fruit, household arrangements — forms a secondary but consistent part of his output.

Professionally, he has served for decades as art editor-in-chief at a children's newspaper publishing house in Shenyang, a position that has given him a long-term, stable base for his painting practice. His work has been shown in regional and national exhibitions across northeastern China.
