Painting analysis

Fresh Peaches has the quiet authority of a still life arranged without theatre. A blue-and-white bowl sits at the centre, its fruit rising just above the rim, while several peaches have rolled forward onto the table. Around them, the purple-brown cloth gathers like a dark curtain, making the orange and rose tones of the fruit feel warmer, heavier, and more deliberate.

The strength of the painting lies in Li Peizhong's restraint. He does not polish the peaches into decorative objects; he lets their roundness come from soft modelling and muted tonal shifts, so each fruit feels ripe rather than perfect. The surrounding brushwork is rougher and more absorbent, especially in the folded cloth, where darker strokes hold the light back and give the whole arrangement its depth.

What first appears modest gradually becomes formal. The inscription on the bowl, the toppled fruit, and the compressed space between table and backdrop turn an ordinary domestic setting into a carefully balanced study of abundance and stillness. Fresh Peaches sits within the modern Chinese still-life tradition, but its seriousness comes from tonal structure rather than from decorative abundance. Li Peizhong's training in the oil-painting culture of northeast China is visible in the controlled weight of the composition: fruit, bowl, table, and backdrop are treated as a single arrangement of mass, light, and restraint.

In spirit, the work has a closer parallel with Chardin than with the more lavish still lifes of the Dutch Golden Age. Like Chardin, Li gives ordinary kitchen-table objects a measured dignity, allowing silence and balance to carry the subject. Yet the darker ground and heavier brushwork also reflect the Russian academic influence that shaped much of northeastern Chinese realism, giving the painting a more atmospheric, contemporary presence.

Artist introduction

Li Peizhong (b. 1957, Shenyang) is an oil painter based in northeast China and a member of both the Chinese Arts and Crafts Artists Association and the Liaoning Provincial Artists Association. He trained in Shenyang during a period when the city's art academies were strongly influenced by the Russian academic tradition, and that inheritance — its emphasis on tonal weight, plein-air practice, and atmospheric depth — remains visible in his work today.

His primary subject is the northern Chinese landscape: the farmlands, rivers, and seasonal shifts of Liaoning and its surrounding provinces. He paints these scenes in a style that combines the heavy, earthy tonalities of the Russian landscape school with the brighter chromatic handling and light sensitivity of European Impressionism. Still life — flowers, fruit, household arrangements — forms a secondary but consistent part of his output.

Professionally, he has served for decades as art editor-in-chief at a children's newspaper publishing house in Shenyang, a position that has given him a long-term, stable base for his painting practice. His work has been shown in regional and national exhibitions across northeastern China.
