Art appreciation

The quay drops vertically along the left edge. The longest foreground vessel extends from the centre towards the lower right and almost touches the frame, while boats behind stack towards the upper left. Cabin roofs, masts and lifting gear interlock. The right half is comparatively unobstructed water, with low shore, buildings and trees compressed in the distance. Density and openness place the fleet’s weight on the left and return the eye to navigable water.

Deep blue, brown-black and violet-grey strokes give the hulls mass, repeatedly edged with narrow white lines. Scraped cold whites and greys describe cabin windows and rails. Masts, ropes and cranes cross in quick linear marks, with red flags punctuating the low-chroma setting. Sky and water are handled thinly and evenly, darkening only in the green-grey reflections beneath the boats. Differences in paint thickness separate machinery from quiet air.

Li’s training in exact drawing and Russian-influenced tonal painting enables him to organise a complicated scene through value. He first joins the dark hulls into one mass, then distinguishes their layers through white structures and red flags. The method suits the limited time of harbour sketching and preserves the actual overlap of vessels. Individual boat details remain subordinate to the working group that forms the village waterfront.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Zhenhong was born in Jilin in 1970 and graduated from Northeast Normal University in 1992. Its art curriculum emphasised drawing, tonal hierarchy and methods influenced by Russian painting, giving him a foundation for organising pictures through structure and value.

He later carried that training into plein-air landscape. Rather than describing every detail, he first establishes mountains, buildings and banks through broad tonal masses, then uses shorter marks to distinguish light and material. Direct observation therefore remains tied to a coherent spatial order.

Li is a member of the Jilin Provincial Artists Association and the Jilin Provincial Oil Painting Society. Documented works include Yellow House by the River, Sea Imagery and Summer Sunlight; across these subjects he continues to work through observed tone and structure.
