Art appreciation

The figure sits left of centre, with shoulders and seated body largely absorbed by darkness. The guitar crosses him on a steep diagonal. Its neck and the upward turn of his face follow related directions. Fingers separate along the frets while the other hand remains near the sound hole. Together with the diagonal guitar neck and lifted face, these illuminated gestures establish the performance within the tightly cropped figure.

Thin layers of black, charcoal and brown build the background, leaving canvas weave and earlier marks visible. Yellow ochre, orange-red and a small amount of cool green model the face before its edges disappear. Thick white paint opens the collar at the chest. Brown and concentrated highlights give the guitar body greater presence, while strings, frets and tuning pegs are picked out in narrow lines. Hands and instrument become the clearest points of contact between musician and viewer.

Zhang has worked extensively with portraits and figures and gained practical experience with focus and lighting through commercial window display. Here he contains the surrounding room in black and retains only what explains the performance. Fieldwork in Tibet and his later professional practice strengthened his interest in figures absorbed in a particular state. Character emerges through action: the musician does not address the viewer, and his raised face and working hands remain directed towards the music.

Style and context

The player's working hands, diagonal guitar neck, lifted face and concentrated light make the performance clear. In twentieth-century figurative painting, close cropping often shifted musical subjects away from formal concert scenes and towards the bodily action of playing. In Guitar Player, the neck establishes the main direction, both hands mark rhythmic points and the lifted face carries attention beyond the frame.

Zhang studied oil painting in Shandong and at the former Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. Figure construction and tonal control allow him to retain face, hands and instrument under very limited light. Expressive colour leaves brushwork visible in skin and wood, while the dark setting isolates the player’s lifted face, working hands and the strong diagonal of the instrument.

About the artist

Zhang Naigui, born on September 20, 1958 in Zibo, Shandong, is a Chinese oil painter who has worked as a professional artist since 1994. He studied oil painting at Shandong Provincial Art Academy from 1976 to 1977, and later entered the oil painting department of the China Academy of Art, formerly Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, in 1987. Before becoming a full-time painter, he worked in Zibo and developed practical visual experience through display design.

A 1986 sketching trip to Tibet with Chinese-American painter Zhang Qi became an important turning point in his artistic direction. Zhang later opened his own oil painting studio in 2002, established a studio in Shenzhen in 2004, and set up another in Shanghai’s Tianzifang in 2008. Since 2012, he has continued his professional practice from his Shenzhen studio, with work that moves between portraiture, figure subjects, and expressive oil-painting studies.

His exhibition and award record includes recognition in Shandong youth and regional art exhibitions, participation in a Chinese oil painting exhibition at the Asian Cultural Center in New York in 2006, solo exhibitions in Bali and Australia in 2007, and works collected by Shenzhen Art Museum.
