Art appreciation

The panoramic format places the grove high in the composition and gives the dark land unusual weight. Gnarled trunks gather on the left, a larger tree extends sideways near the centre, and smaller silhouettes continue across the horizon. Their irregular spacing leaves openings through the grove while preserving the sense of a continuous belt of old trees.

Handling separates sky, bark, and earth as clearly as colour does. The upper grey is thin and scraped. Trunks are built from thicker deposits, incisions, and dry drag marks that suggest split surfaces and broken limbs. Across the lower half, charcoal, brown, violet, and blue-grey have been pressed and rubbed together. Small ochre passages interrupt this dense field and pick out the ground around several trunks.

The trees remain fully recognisable despite the restricted palette. Some stand upright, others bend, and several survive only as hollow or truncated forms. Yang Fuxu has repeatedly worked with trees, remembered land, and close views of the ground. Here that practice is visible in the low horizon and the attention given to damaged bark and accumulated paint. Twisted trunks, exposed pale branches and scraped, granular paint give the grove its physical strain.

Theme

Style and context

Much contemporary Chinese landscape painting retains identifiable terrain while giving colour and material a more expressive role. Rather than recording every feature, painters can use abrasion, layered pigment, and repetition to convey the climate and accumulated time of a place. Populus Euphratica follows this path: the grove is structurally clear, while the dark foreground behaves almost as a field of compressed matter.

Yang Fuxu's work repeatedly returns to home, rural ground, and trees as carriers of memory. That concern is tangible here. Twisted trunks establish the image, the dense earth gives it weight, and the narrow ochre interval introduces change without relieving the austerity. His method allows the subject and the worked surface to reinforce one another, making the grove feel observed and remembered at once.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yang Fuxu (born 1980) graduated from the Guangxi Academy of Arts and later undertook advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and through a China Federation of Literary and Art Circles programme for emerging cultural practitioners. He is a member of the China Artists Association. This training supports both his academic command of form and his continued experiments with material and composition.

His practice includes the Homeland, Duilianggou, Dancer and Brilliant Night series. Homeland and Duilianggou use close views of rural ground; Dancer builds rhythms resembling bodily movement through leaning, crossing and extended trunks; Brilliant Night places artificial light within dense dark layers.

His exhibition record includes Fengyu Southwest in 2013, a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme in 2019 and selection for the national Era, Portrait exhibition in 2023. Across these series, recognisable landscape forms increasingly give way to thick paint, broad colour fields and rhythmic structure.
