Art appreciation

A deep blue ground occupies most of the canvas, while an irregular cluster of geometric planes gathers below the centre. A large turquoise trapezoid rises at the back. A red wedge enters from the left, and pale blue, white, yellow, purple and bright green forms overlap across the lower half. They do not resolve into a recognisable object or a symmetrical construction. Order comes instead from the direction of the diagonals, the unequal size of the planes and the sequence of partial concealments.

Most edges are crisp, yet the interiors are scored with vertical scratches and flecks of darker paint. Red, green, yellow and purple establish sharp colour contrasts, while the surrounding blue keeps these saturated passages distinct. Slim violet-brown strips sit slightly offset from several edges and resemble shadows cast by flat sheets; they also make neighbouring forms easier to separate. The painting combines the clarity of a designed structure with the irregular surface of worked paint.

Fioroni studied computing and spent years in web and 3D design before turning to professional art. That experience helps explain his use of separate, overlapping planes and offset dark bands to organise depth. The paint also marks a clear difference from a digital design: scratches, changes of thickness and glimpses of the ground vary from one shape to the next, giving the geometry the record of its making.

Style and context

Geometric abstraction shifted attention away from represented objects toward relationships among line, colour, proportion and the picture plane. Later hard-edge painting made boundaries cleaner and colour areas more distinct, allowing a composition to register with the directness of a designed system. The clearly separated planes in Shapes and Shadows place the work within this broader discussion.

In this work, clean outlines and separated colour fields recall the basic procedures of hard-edge painting, but repeated scraping prevents the surfaces from becoming uniform. The narrow dark bands do not turn the planes into fully modelled objects; a slight displacement is enough to strengthen overlap. The composition therefore moves between flat design and shallow pictorial space, while the worked surfaces keep the geometry from becoming a polished pattern.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Emanuele Fioroni, known professionally as Lele Fioroni, was born in Milan in 1977. He studied computer science at the International University of Milan and later worked in web and 3D design, building a creative practice shaped by structure, interface, and visual communication. He first came to Shenzhen on business in 2009, settled there in 2014, and in 2018 committed fully to painting after years of working alongside design and music.

Fioroni is a cross-disciplinary artist, designer, vocalist, and guitarist, as well as the founder of Art View (Shenzhen) Art Co., Ltd. His work grows from the meeting point between Italian visual energy and the Chinese culture he has lived with in Shenzhen. Chinese characters, urban change, layered surfaces, and material contrast are central to his practice; he often breaks down strokes, blocks, and signs, then rebuilds them through colour, texture, and divided fields.

His materials have included acrylic, gold leaf, masking tape, keyboard parts, cables, and oil paint, depending on the project. This openness gives his work a distinctive position within Shenzhen's contemporary art scene: it carries the discipline of design, the rhythm of music, and the physical freedom of studio painting. Fioroni has presented solo exhibitions in Shenzhen, including Time Labyrinth in 2020 and The 'Art' of Chinese Characters in 2021, and has participated in local and international exchange exhibitions.
