Art appreciation

The vase stands at the lower centre, its mouth hidden by a dense gathering of stems. Orange-red blooms dominate the upper middle, with violet-blue, dark green, pale yellow, and white distributed between them. The bouquet is asymmetrical: foliage opens at the upper left and lower flowers extend to the right, carrying the eye along several directions. The cool vase and stable tabletop support the colour above.

Short, substantial strokes place petals directly beside and over one another, so orange, red, pink, and violet can coexist within a single bloom. Darker, quicker lines indicate leaves and stems, with some contours absorbed into the background. Large passages of grey-green and violet-grey give the vase enough roundness and weight, while surrounding rubs and brush marks remain visible. Flower density, vessel volume, and open ground create three distinct rhythms.

Shi’s still lifes begin with classical observation, but years of plein-air practice have sharpened his attention to momentary colour and encouraged more immediate handling. He condenses flowers into interacting colour masses and reduces the vessel to the volume needed to support them. The bouquet stays recognisable while the relation between warm flowers, cool ceramic, and surrounding air becomes the real subject.

Flower still life has long served painters as a concentrated study of colour, volume, and interior light. Across modern painting, flowers could increasingly be assembled from brush marks rather than sealed contours, while the background ceased to be a closed stage. Still Life with Flowers retains the clear vase-and-bouquet relationship and opens its edges into visible acts of painting.

Shi devotes a substantial part of each year to travel and outdoor work. Direct observation has lifted his palette and quickened his brush. Even indoors, he approaches the arrangement with the responsiveness of field study: a cool grey-green vase establishes the first anchor, then orange-red and violet blooms spread above it. Classical training keeps the volumes convincing, while freer strokes preserve the bouquet’s unsettled vitality.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Shi Fei was born in 1967 in the Greater Khingan Range, Heilongjiang, and is now based in Shenzhen, where he serves on the council of the Shenzhen Artists Association. His practice is grounded in realist construction and ranges from plein-air landscape and wetlands to studio still life.

Growing up in northeast China acquainted him with pronounced seasonal change. Years of travelling and painting outdoors extended that observation across different terrain and weather. Spending substantial periods each year in the field gradually raised the key of his palette and moved his brushwork from complete modelling towards quicker blocks of colour and loaded strokes.

His subjects include the Baiyangdian wetlands in Hebei as well as flowers, fruit and everyday vessels. Whether working from a distant landscape or objects on a table, he first establishes volume and tonal order, then preserves the speed of direct observation so that academic realism and immediate handling remain visible together.
