Art appreciation

The flower mass runs from the middle left towards the upper right, with the largest yellow-white heads clustered in the centre. Smaller blooms at the edges recede into the blue-violet ground. Dark green foliage supports the pale flowers, although no complete vase is clearly described. Without a firm table or vessel, the bouquet fills the immediate foreground; scattered pink marks interrupt the continuous spread of yellow and white.

Short, turning strokes of yellow, white and cream build the chrysanthemums. Some passages cover the underlayers thickly, while others drag dry pigment over blue-green. Petal edges alternate between definition and merger with neighbouring flowers. Broader violet-grey and deep-blue planes open the background, and scraped areas retain traces of scraping and revision. Cool colour enters the flower shadows as well as setting off the yellow, keeping the compact subject spacious.

Hu is known for disciplined drawing and saturated colour, often used in figures and subjects from Yunnan and southwestern China. This still life directs the same abilities towards flowers. Academic training keeps the bouquet weighted and spatially ordered; vivid colour allows single blossoms to loosen into the whole. Dense paint describes the flowers as a collective bloom, while the mass of bloom takes precedence over individual varieties.

Style and context

Modern floral still life often moves away from formal arrangements towards close cropping, allowing flowers to occupy the entire canvas and shift between observed form and abstract colour. Yellow Chrysanthemum Still Life retains the turning petals and clustered growth of chrysanthemums while reducing vase and table, bringing temperature, paint thickness and density to the front. It remains recognisably a floral still life and has not entered pure abstraction.

Hu established his foundations in drawing and composition at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and later joined academic technique with the vivid colour of southwestern subjects. That experience remains visible here: blue-green supports the yellow-white mass, while pink appears only in selected places. Moving close to the bouquet removes narrative distraction and lets colour maintain depth across a crowded surface.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Hu Xuebo was born in Chongqing in September 1972 and entered the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1993. His studies established the drawing, modelling and compositional methods that underpin his oil painting.

Hu's work is closely connected with Yunnan. He paints Miao and Yi women, gardens and everyday settings, combining carefully modelled figures with saturated colour drawn from clothing, flowers and the surrounding landscape. Over time, these subjects have allowed him to move from general academic exercises towards a more specific account of life and visual culture in southwest China.

His works include Miao Girl, Beauty — Gazing at Fish, Kunming Welcomes You, Ethnic Girl and Watching Flowers Bloom. He participated in the New Classical Academic Oil Painting Exhibition — When Colorful Yunnan Meets Shenzhen in 2020 and the Entering Colorful Yunnan — Welcome COP15 exhibition at the Yunnan Literature and Art Museum in 2021. A solo exhibition was held at the Wuhua District Cultural Art Center in Kunming in 2022.
